March 9, 1959 was when Mattel gave birth to her and more than 1 billion Barbie dolls have found a home in little (and big) girls bedrooms – fulfilling fantasies of glamor and the desires to be a tall skinny blond with big blue eyes! (sigh…)
Barbie is the all-American girl, sorry, I mean doll who has become an icon wonder in both business, and simply as a toy! She evolved over the years with her 108 various jobs, was mostly loyal to her long-term boyfriend Ken, drove around in a snazzy pink convertible, always stayed with the latest fashion (her first outfit was the black and white striped bathing suit of the 50′s) and even had more accessories than any real girl could ever dream of (no wonder she never stopped smiling!)
Whether we love or dislike her, the title ‘princess of plastic’ rightfully belongs to Barbie. I went to visit the expo “Barbie and her Accessories” in honor of her 50th Birthday at the Pavilion Cambon on the fashionably glamorous rue Cambon on the very day of her Birthday too. It was held in conjunction with the prestigious accessories expo “The Box – Paris New York” where some of the world’s trendiest designers were showcasing their delicious accessories that would make any girl’s mouth water…..Of course after salivating away at the gorgeous handbags, jewelry and shoes, I headed to the room that I came to see originally, and what I found was a room full of Barbies each dressed by one of 50 accessory designers commissioned to dress Barbie in their own style (carte blanche!) – so we’re talking Barbie as she’s never been seen before – tattoos, bling-bling and even pet dogs! What a perfect way to celebrate your birthday – in true designer style – so Happy 50th birthday Barbs, you don’t look a day over 22!
