Chocolate Haute Couture style

Monday, October 19, 2009 Posted by Nirit Sumeruk

ummm, yes, the shoes above are made of pure delectable chocolate decorating a Mademoiselle Slassi hat. The hats for this event were especially commissioned by this milliner for the contestants...

For all you chocoholics out there - if you missed the Salon du Chocolate, well you missed out! If you are feeling slightly upset, I'm gonna make it worse by saying that you also missed out the third year running of the WORLD CHOCOLATE MASTERS

Yes, you read it right, a 3 day championship within the Salon Professionel du Chocolate dedicated to creating the best contemporary design of chocolate - this international, mouth-watering, and highly artistic event which is an initiative by Barry Callebaut (basically the kings of the best cocoa and chocolate products!) comprised of Culinary chefs from 19 different countries who competed for the yummy and prestigious title of Chocolate Master

I have to confess that I'm not the biggest lover of sweet food (I have a passionate relationship with the savory), but when chocolate becomes art and is used in the theme of Haute Couture (as it was this year) and turns into a nail-biting, finger-licking competition, then what's not to love?

This year's winner is Shigeo Hirai, Sous Chef of the Grand Hyatt Tokyo  decorating a Mademoiselle Slassi hat (photo by Pascale Lorton)

Together with the charming Vincent LeClerc, we co-hosted this event - while he provided competition commentary  on-stage, I got the fun task of running around backstage tasting chocolate creations, becoming best friends with the chefs and interviewing chocolate professionals.

Vincent LeClerc and me sharing a few slabs of chocolate while on a short break

Below are a few snapshots of my Willy Woka experience backstage (or rather I prefer to think I was more like Charlie wondered by this chocolate factory)

this wasn't me!

this sculpture made of pure chocolate was created by Sebastien Trudelle from France who came 5th in the competition

The winner, Japan's Shigeo Hirai's chocolate sculpture...(ok, I only zoomed onto the chocolate shoes here!)

Chef Philippe Vancayseele handing me a mic he made entirely of chocolate especially for me!

me interviewing UK's Mark Tilling about his secret recipe...(or more correctly, me eating his secret recipe)

Posing with chef and commentator Alexandre Bourdeaux. My incredibly cool retro black dress was specially created by designer Ylan Anoufa for this event!

and my shoes were sponsored by Pring Paris

Did I like this event, no. I loved it! Especially when the team behind it all was sweeter than chocolate -aaaaaah! (thanks Chloe, Bruno, Isabelle, Steven, Philippe 'Alain', Vincent, Karima, Philippe and Alexander the chefs....to name but a few!)
Seriously though, diet starts tomorrow - but it was all worth it!

Ever wondered what it's like to have your own chef waiting in the fridge? Wonder no more....

Nirit, my dear, thank you for being such a wonderful hostess during the World Chocolate Masters!
The competition was yummy, but you gave it so much additional glamour... And I love your tasty report. Especially the "cool" chef in the freezer..!
