Saint-Paul de Vence: just follow the cobble stones

Perched high above the Côte d’Azur, Saint-Paul de Vence is one of the most romantic medieval villages in the French Riviera — and perhaps the most enchanting. Enclosed by ramparts, the town feels like stepping back in time, its cobbled alleyways winding past stone houses, vine-covered walls, and a trove of art galleries. Marc Chagall lived here from 1966 until his death in 1985. Other famous artists who spent time in the village include Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, and Raoul Dufy.

At the village’s heart stands an old stone fountain, a gathering place for centuries and still one of the most photographed spots in town.

From here, it’s only steps to the most delicious ice-cream parlour, Mona Lisa, serving the most unique ice cream experience from timeless classics to more daring creations: peanut caramel, orange blossom with pistachio burst, white chocolate with coconut burst, dubai chocolate... you will possibly come back for more!

You will also find yourself drawn into into little boutiques overflowing with French calissons, nougat, and candied fruits wrapped like edible jewels. From the ramparts, the views stretch out across vineyards, olive groves, and down to the glittering Mediterranean.

No visit is complete without the Fondation Maeght, the village’s most famous gallery and one of France’s finest modern art museums (it houses sculptures by Miró and Giacometti alongside an extraordinary collection of 20th- and 21st-century works by artists like Chagall and Léger) — a reminder that art has always been woven into the soul of Saint-Paul. Marc Chagall lived in this village from 1966 until his death in 1985. Other famous artists who spent time in the village include Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, and Raoul Dufy.

Dining is another ritual here. I like to return to Le Tilleul, where Provençal plates are served under shady trees in the village square. And if you’re staying longer, the legendary La Colombe d’Or — offers 5-star comfort and walls lined with works left by the artists who once stayed there.

Saint-Paul de Vence is a place where history and art meet at every corner — a village that proves romance can be timeless.
